A beautiful Solander box made for the Chairman of London.

A Solander box is a book-form case used for storing manuscripts, maps, prints, documents, etc. It is commonly used in archives and libraries. It is named after Swedish botanist Daniel Carlsso Solander (1733-1782), who is credited with its construction while working at the British Museum.

The world has lost another great author..

We pay tribute today to this amazing fantasy author and the creator of the Discworld series. Sir Terry Pratchett fantasy author has died aged 66. Sir Terry was diagnosed with alzheimer's disease eight years ago, died at home with his family and with his cat sleeping on his bed. Sadly missed in the book world.

Rare book - bound with a native-patterned fabric..

Here's a truly wonderful find for all us bookbinding folk out there! We stumbled upon this book on Tumblr - Uniquely bound in a half native-patterned fabric, The Song of Hiawatha from 1907.  Longfellow, Henry Wadworth - Published and printed by Rand, McNally & Co., Chicago, 1907

That lovely native-pattern fabric, half bound with an orange fabric cloth and finished with two gold foils. 108 years old and still going strong. Great quality bookbinding at its best.

A tribute to an extremely talented bookbinder..

Very sadly, David Sellars passed away this month and we would like to pay tribute to an extremely talented bookbinder.

Sellars’ approach to materials always expressively and skillfully articulates the subject with a beautiful sculptural approach to working with leather, and his passion has seen him teach the subject of book art across the world further exploring the art and science of bookbinding.

Enjoying the more artistic side of bookbinding Sellars career has spanned from apprenticeship at the age of 15 to studying conservation, serving as president of designer bookbinders, teaching and running his own studio producing design bindings and limited editions.

His creativity, knowledge and vision will be missed but will continue to inspire those who shared his passion.
