London Bookbinding specialise in using traditional and contemporary techniques to offer a full bespoke bookbinding service. We create custom bindings and boxes that perfectly complement the book's content.
Don't forget we can also print all your contents too - Traditional bookbinders with a modern attitude.
Case Bound Books
A method of binding which sews single sheets together with an over sewn stitch in a hard cover. The text block is held inside the case with the endpapers.
Soft Bound Books
A method of binding which sews single sheets together with an over sewn stitch. This has a soft cover which is attached to the book block with endpapers
Method of stitching visible to the outside of the book. On a standard exposed stitching, the thread will run down the spine edge. Coptic binding, Japanese binding, button hole stitch or long stitch are other types of exposed stitching with decorative patterns.
Section Sewn Books
Method of binding which sews a number of sections together to create the text block. This binding lays flat and has the option of having a square spine or a rounded spine.
Screw Post Binding
Style1: A binding that uses screws to hold the pages in between the two covering boards.
Style 2: A binding where the pages are screwed into a hard case. The cover is similar to a hard binding with a square spine and unfolds to reveal the screw post inside. The pages are screwed onto the back board of the case.
Portfolio style: A binding where the screw posts are not visible on the cover. This is achieved by turning in the edge of the cover boards to create a hinge allowing the covering boards to sit over the screws. A spine piece of material is added and the screws are only visible when the book is opened.
We make classic binders with a creative twist. Crafted by hand using the finest materials – we offer printed paper-over-board, innovative cloth coverings and fine leathers – and like all of our bespoke products, you can choose the colour of your lining and preferred binding mechanism.
A binding that uses a single section sewn with a running stitch down the spine.
A concertina fold, also known as a zig-zag fold, accordion fold or z-fold, is a continuous parallel folding of pages in an accordion-like fashion, that is with folds alternatively made to the front and back in zig-zag folds. In bookbinding we can create a book with pages concertina-folded and front and back boards so that it can be handled like a case bound book. Sometimes there is a spine too, which provides a normal page-turning experience.
Lay Flat Binding
Lay Flat Books are the next generation in presentation books and photo albums. They are a custom book produced from high quality digital images.
Case bindings can also be covered with leather. The process remains the same as a standard case binding in the sense that a sewn text block –usually in sections- will be cased inside the cover. However, the work onto the cover is more complex. The leather around the corners and the headcaps areas needs to be pared. Then, the inner cover will be filled with a piece of card so it heavens it out to the same thickness as the leather turned in.
We would recommend to use made endpapers using a decorative paper to case the book inside the leather cover for a beautiful effect when opening it.
Finishing (foiling, debossing, tooling, etc) can be added to the cover. Please consult us for any design ideas.
Books that have been read a lot and suffered or old books may sometimes need to be repaired.
Our aim in restoring or repairing books is to keep the appearance of the book as if it had never been repaired by keeping as much as possible of the original material to maintain the book’s integrity. A typical repair can include repairing corners, rebacking the original spine and the joints. A restoration could include re-stitching, replacing the linings or endpages, ageing paper, repairing pages and guarding matching the original book as closely as possible. We could use either cloth or leather.
Every repair is different. We will ask to see the book before we can evaluate the work needed. We recommend to book an appointment for a free consultation to discuss the options available.
Protective covering where the book (or a set of books) is slipped in for protection leaving the spine exposed. Slipcases are lined with either paper or suede.
A clamshell box is a protective box with a hinged lid connected to its base. Both the lid and bottom sections of the box have three fixed side sections. The lid is slightly larger than so that the side pieces ‘nest’ when the case is closed. The fourth spine side has a hinge to join the top and bottom of the box: the flexible joint allows the box to lay flat when opened. Its interior may be lined with paper or suedel, especially if made for a book.
A box where magnets have been included to help close the box. There is one tray and the lid of the box wraps over the tray and attaches to the side of the box.

A process where an impression is created using either a die or lettering onto a book cover or material. A foil is adhered onto the surface with heat and it creates an indent to the cover. This technique is usually used for prestigious literature and presentations. These finishes can provide the ultimate in decorative appeal. They are not limited to gold and silver foils, but extend to an impressive range of pigmented, holographic and security foils. All of these produce varying tactile effects, any one of which will enhance the printed message.
