All the great reasons why books should never die!

They look like copies of paper, but they can’t be designed or typeset in the same way as paper, and however splendid the cover images may look on a hi-res screen, they’re still images rather than physical things.

Rodeo Galley - Soho, came to see us about their up-and-coming exhibition Gentle Madness conceived by  their artist Banu Cennetoğlu. Her concept was to get newspapers from different places all over the UK and get us to bind them into case bound books in alphabetical order with foiling on each of them. A Newly Released Dr Seuss’ Book Of His Lesser-Known ‘Lost Stories’...

Guest User

Random House has released a book of Dr Seuss’ lesser known stories that have largely been forgotten.

Titled, Horton and the Kwuggerbug and more Lost Stories, these four short stories were originally written forRedbook magazine in the ’50s.

Those familiar with his work will remember characters like Horton the elephant and the Grinch who almost stole Christmas—it appears that they will come to life once more between the pages of this book.

An impressive collection of antique bookbinding machinery,

The American Bookbinders Museum was founded by Tim James, a commercial bookbinder who became fascinated with the craft’s history while he was amassing and upgrading his equipment.  Researching and acquiring vintage materials became a dedicated hobby, but as his collection of machines, books and periodicals became more massive it raised the question of what he was supposed to do with all of it.  The answer was to use these resources to mount an authentic, fully-functional 19th century-style bookbindery.

Rare Books - Peter Harrington Bookshop...

Guest User

Pom Harrington, owner of his father’s antique bookshop, Peter Harrington Rare Books.

Whatever technological advances, the principles that determine what makes a book valuable remain the same. “It could be the greatest-looking book in the world,” says Harrington, “but if no one likes it, no one cares. You want desirability of the text, then the first printing, then the rarity. For example, around 4,000 copies were first printed of Winnie the Pooh, but it became very popular so they issued 26,000 copies so the price goes down by a third in the second printing.

While Pom Harrington has been involved in the sale of books worth £500,000, the vast majority go for a couple of thousand pounds, coming from a select group of popular authors; Roald Dahl, JK Rowling, Winston Churchill (of whom the shop is something of a specialist), AA Milne, Ian Fleming, and Jane Austen  (“who I just can’t get enough of. I’d sell them every day if I had them”).
